The Zircon Skyeband Origin Story — Part 2

Flash backward to 1996 – Ojai CA – I acquired a 2” Otari 24 track machine, Neotek console, Neumann mics, Neve pres etc. Zircon Skye Production was established as a recording studio, publishing company and record label. The first group I recorded – Orcus RA – brought in Jeff Evans to assist with production.

I marvel at Jeff’s skills. His ability to accommodate, add a most tasty part, and bring a musical vision to reality has been a huge factor in my own creative efforts. Since switching primarily from tape media to Pro Tools - I have happily handed the engineering duties to Jeff. He and I continue to collaborate.

We moved out of my house and into a 3200 sq ft studio (Zircon Skye Production) in Ojai in 1999.

Our first client was Anthony Hopkins doing a pitch for a charity for kids with AIDs. Ken Eros capably joined us in 2003. The enterprise continued in that Bryant Street location until 2010. Releases by Orcus RA, Kitty Kat Stew, Dos Coyotes, The Warm Guns, Hyperplush and Force 4D were met with varying success.

In 2017 Jeff and I went to Nicaragua and recorded Pachamama with Tierra Madre. In that same year my house in Ojai burned to the ground along with a lifetime of musical acquisitions. The house has been rebuilt and in the last year we have installed a credible (we are working our way to incredible)  studio.

We have had success – movie and TV placements – but truthfully I have always thought that our music should have been more widely successful. It is a tough business. I have not given up on my dream. I am still trying.

Soon, I am thrilled to formally release “She Rides on the Starshine”, “Over It!”, “Leg Up!!” and “Protection” along with 7 of my other all time favorite Zircon Skye tracks.

This one is for you Ela!
